IDENTITY THEFT
CPI: Helping Consumers Reduce the Risk of Identity Theft

Folks are concerned about financial privacy, identity theft and online security.  They
are uneasy, and that gives Credit Professionals an opportunity to provide helpful
information about privacy and fraud. Learning about ID theft and then sharing your
knowledge is a way to stand out in your community.

The use of your personal identifying information without your permission to commit
fraud or other crimes is called Identity Theft. Personal identifying information could be
your name, social security number, bank account number, or credit card. ID theft can
ruin your good name and destroy your credit. Identity theft can't be prevented but
you can reduce your risk of becoming a victim.

CPI members Kathryn Greiner and Beth Blanco have developed a PowerPoint
presentation and handouts on how ID theft happens, how to reduce the risk, and
what to do if it happens to you. These two financial counselors bring the presentation
to life by adding real stories of ID theft victims (without identifying them). When you
do an ID theft workshop, you can ask your audience if any have been a victim of ID
theft.  Some may share their experience with ID theft and how they resolved it

Here are more resources with information to include in your presentation:

Coping with Identity Theft: Reducing the Risk of Fraud from the Privacy Rights
Clearinghouse lists steps to reduce your risk of becoming a victim of ID theft.

The FTC's Identity Theft Site provides tips to help you protect yourself from ID Theft.
It also lists the steps to take if you are a victim of ID theft.
